HEALTH BENEFITS OF WORKING FROM HOME

I don’t know about you but stuck in five-lane traffic for over an hour a day, one way, is stressful to say the least. Add to that the pollution of the environment and the impatience of other drivers which can lead to hasty moves in and out of a line of traffic and ultimately (at times) to an accident and you have a recipe for daily disaster. If you work from home, you’re staying off crowded streets and away from exhaust fumes and irritable, impatient drivers.

When I was driving to and from work five days a week (feeling sorry for the folks that had to work six and seven days a week), I never really thought a lot about the health issues of the commute, but needless to say, my mind-body connection was stressed. Plus having that set schedule of when to be at work and when to quit for the day causes anxiety, especially in the mornings when there’s the chance of (a) over-sleeping, (b) alarm didn’t go off (or you turned it off in your sleep), (c) you misplaced your keys, (d) you didn’t realize you were so low on gas so you have to stop at a station – which takes time, (e) it snowed during the night and you didn’t count on so much driveway shoveling – which can lead to very slow travel time over slippery streets … and on and on it goes. It’s mental anxiety and your health will pay!

When you work from home, you have that little bit of extra time each morning to sleep in, spend time in prayer or meditation, have that extra cup of herbal tea or even get in some light aerobics at the start of your day. All this can help lower blood pressure and the cortisol that stress throws into your system.

If you had a long commute to work then sit at a computer all day, you probably noticed your back wasn’t’ very happy with you. By working remotely from home, you can break up those long periods of time sitting and practice good posture that will avoid backaches and headaches…which equates to fewer trips to the doctor’s office, reducing health care costs as well!

Last but not least, people who work from home seem to find more time to do the things they really want to do, which creates a more balanced, harmonious lifestyle with greater personal satisfaction overall.
