The "Switch"

Ever heard the phrase “I think, therefore I am?”

It’s called mindset and it affects every part of your daily life. How you think about something affects how you feel – and let’s face it, we all run high on emotions. Everyone wants to feel good about what they do.

When you decide that the run-of-the-mill, 9 to 5 isn’t for you anymore, you’re going to have to adjust your thinking.

Working from home is awesome and, if this is your choice - I applaud you. But realize that anyone who has decided to leave the “grind” and be successful working for themselves needs to have a shift in thought; a new mindset.

As some company’s employee all you need to do is show up for work, do what they expect you to do, get a paycheck for the amount they feel you and your work is worth – then rinse and repeat. Any decision – good, bad or in-between - has been made for you. You are told what those decisions are and you can either like it or lump it … do it or not. You are replaceable at their whim or fancy. Getting older? Trust me when I say that, although it is illegal to discriminate against age, companies do find a way. Wouldn’t it be great if your skill sets could be appreciated until YOU decided to call it quits?

frustration leads to a better work-life balance when you work from home.
Man can't stand the old JOB grind!

Some folks prefer to be a member of the masses, trading hours for dollars on someone else’s terms. But if you’re here - reading this right now - you’re either thinking about becoming your own boss or you’ve already decided something has got to change.

Perhaps you have a family situation or health situation that your job doesn’t understand or tolerate … perhaps there are things related to your current position that does not “sit right” with you … perhaps you have realized that depending on someone else for your financial stability isn’t all that stable.

Whatever the reason that brought you here, realize that once you take that leap of faith in yourself, all decisions are your responsibility. You won’t be able to wait for someone to tell you what to do; you won’t be able to wait for something to happen. It’s all you.

Secondly, you must realize that what you do now – today – will have an effect on your tomorrows. With the Arise work from home opportunities, you won’t have to re-invent the wheel or come up with the next great “idea” to launch on Shark Tank. But you will need to take the bull by the horns and make decisions about which Fortune 500 company you’ll work with and if you want to work within the framework of an already-established IBO (Independent Business Owner) or become your own IBO. Either way, it’s still “all you,” and it’s still a win-win.

Another issue most new independent contractors face is a sense of comfort. Your previous comfort zone was the work-for-someone-else-on-their-terms-grind. This must change to being willing to step outside your comfort zone and be a bit adventurous. It requires a little courage and risk-taking.

If you've read this far … you’re ready for this.

When you work for yourself, a willingness to learn is key. Let’s face it; life itself is a continuous journey of lessons learned. Working from home is just another step in that journey.

But what if your one goal is a simple “show me the money?” You need to realize your cash flow is just that – YOUR cash flow! You will be choosing your own hours – how much and when you work – and accepting that your income is directly tied to those choices. Your mindset will need to shift from “It’s payday” to “It’s MY payday.” Know what I mean?

As an employee, you may have done much that you didn’t like or want to do for that paycheck; as an independent contractor, you choose who you’ll work with and how many hours you’ll trade for the dollars. While you won’t be tied to your home office desk or kitchen table, you’ll always need to be aware that if you want to earn more, all you need to do is choose more hours to work OR be so good at what you’re doing that you’ll reach bonus levels (yes, there are bonus levels for doing a good job, and it’s called “Mo’ money”!).

Finally, most folks don’t realize that you cannot quit your 9 – 5 job today and begin making money as an independent contractor tomorrow. You’ll need to take the time to begin shifting that mindset now from “fast food” to a diligently prepared “cuisine.” In other words, you’ll need to realize that successfully working-from-home requires having the things you’ll need for whatever opportunity you choose, doing the “time” (taking a certification class to develop (or enhance) skills), and giving yourself the benefit of the doubt. You CAN do this. The question is … is it time for you to make that switch?

The choice is YOURS.
